While we use the terms grief and mourning interchangeably in everyday life, there is a difference that can be helpful to understand.
Grief are the internal emotions and feelings we have swirling around inside of us. It is important to allow grief to happen, to experience our feelings and emotions and not push them away. Emotions that aren’t dealt with tend to stick around and then burst to the surface at inopportune times. The Grief Wave function is designed to allow you to feel your emotions in a safe space.
Mourning is your mind and soul making sense of your loss. This could be in the form of crying or wailing. But it’s also done through journaling, talking, writing, or doing workbook exercises. These activities require you to put your emotions into words. When you speak or write your brain starts to make sense of what you’re saying and feeling.
Mourning creates the opportunity for your mind and soul to process what has happened. It helps you come to terms with your new reality. When this happens you are no longer fighting it. You’re not constantly replaying the past in hopes of changing the future, you’re not freezing yourself in place because letting change happen means admitting your loss actually happened.
The Memory Book, Audio Journal, and Workbook features of The Grief App are all designed to help you mourn.
