I wanted to caution you to be a little bit extra careful right now. As a widow, widower or somebody else who’s going through grief, you are emotionally not yourself. You’re fragile. Oftentimes, you’re lonelier than normal because you’ve lost someone important in your life.
And so when somebody comes offering friendship, you may be more willing to go into it with your eyes closed. Just be a little cautious because people do specifically target widows, widowers, and other people in grief.
You’re emotionally fragile. You might have life insurance. You might have come into other inheritance. Suddenly you’ve got money or resources that you didn’t have before. This makes you an appealing target.
I am a moderator for a Facebook group for widow and widowers. This came about as I was trying to find any type of support at all after my husband’s death. In this Facebook group we just had an instance come up where we, the moderators, had a chat amongst ourselves about what we were going to allow and if we trusted someone that was in the group. And I will say that we are very cautious. We’re very concerned about this.
It’s because of the potential for scammers that we ask information before we let you into the group. And I know it can feel odd when you’re first widowed and you try to get into a group and they want you to post a link to the person’s obituary and answer a few questions about it. It’s not because we’re being nosy. It’s because we’re trying to verify that you are actually widowed or widowed and that you’re not a scammer trying to gain access to the group.
I’ll try to see if I can find someone in the field that can talk to this a little bit more thoroughly for my upcoming podcast that I haven’t released yet. But just putting it out there. Be cautious, careful, and and know that that possibility exists. Just kind of keep it in the back of your head. If something seems a little bit off stop and reassess the situation.
